
Ronda Rousey
Ronda Jean Rousey (born February 1, 1987 to world-champion AnnMaria De Mars) is an American judo champion with a 2008 Olympic medal, over 20 gold medals and a slew of other accomplishments under her belt. With an already impressive resume, this tenacious fighter’s next step is naturally into the MMA world. Originally a competitive swimmer, Ronda began training in judo at age 11 . In just under five, years she was raking in the medals. At just 17, Ronda qualified for her first Olympic Team, becoming the youngest judo player in the entire Games. After claiming the top finish for the U.S. women at the 2004 Olympic Games (ninth), Ronda became only the second U.S. athlete ever to win a gold medal at the 2004 World Junior Judo Championships in Budapest.
In April 2006, Ronda made history again, becoming the first U.S. female athlete in nearly 10 years to win an A-Level event as she went 5-0 to claim gold at the Birmingham World Cup in Great Britain. Later that year, the 19-year-old won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships, becoming the first U.S. athlete ever to win two Junior World medals.
In February 2007, Ronda moved up to 70kg where she is currently ranked as one of the top three women in the world. By August she made history again by becoming the USA’s first female medalist since women’s judo became a fully recognized sport in the Olympic Games.
In 2010, Ronda made her amateur MMA debut with an impressive arm bar that ended the match in less than 30 seconds. 7 fights and about a year and a half later, on March 4th, 2012, Ronda beat Meisha Tate by an Armbar in the first round to capture the Strikeforce Women’s 135 lbs. championship. Ronda currently trains with MMA Legend Gokor Chivichyan, Wrestling World Champion Leo Frincu, and is focusing on her striking game under the guide of Edmond “The Diamond” Tarverdyan.
